    This poor confused pilot, if he was a pilot, probably should have been kept on the ground until someone could have spoken to him and check his license and state of mind.     The pilot and ATC were literally having a bromance moment haha. Loved it! Though it's confusing ATC didn't understand he was declaring an emergency. I guess it's because in the US they would say they declare an emergency, but British Airways is used to the Mayday call to declare the emergency?

    WOW.. good judgement on the part of the pilots! less than 90 miles from their destination, probably already descending and getting setup for landing when they diverted! So close and so tempting to PUSH-ON. Good judgment, better safe than sorry with no good alternates between Elmira and Syracuse.

    I'm never surprised that ARFF has no fucking clue what is going on and how to do their job. Just about every video with ARFF in it is them being absolutely befuddled on how to operate. On top of that, they are an expensive asset. I hope that if I ever get in an aircraft emergency that I can put the fire out myself so I don't have to listen to them struggle.

    ATC caused it. Should have waited for readback of hold short before asking unimportant question about a frickin' gate number! But pilot at fault too as he didn't read back and in fact disobeyed an instruction.

    I don’t think blaming the CFI for this guy getting nervous is very fair. Maybe this guy demonstrated the ability with an instructor beside him. Whole different ball game when you find yourself alone. I’d like to know how many of these arm chair warriors in this comment section has actually flown a plane before.

    Although I usually don't pan anyone but I have to say that the emergency truck was not the sharpest guy I've ever heard. He ask the fuel remaining and souls and got an answer from the tower and then asked again. What puzzled me was when the tower told him there were 49 souls on board he asked if it was a commercial flight. Did he think 49 people were on a flying bus? I realize he is operations but they didn't declare an emergency so he should have stayed off the air and listened.

    @Paul Davison It's actually a 6 point scale. 6 being dry, 5 wet and Good braking action all the way down to 0 being NIL braking action. (Don't land on a NIL runway. :) Thats basically ice.

    @Justin Saltalamacchia Thanks, I suddenly remember parts of other videos like these where ground at JFK tells aircraft to monitor tower at 123.9 or something similar. So "tower" and "ground" are different, but everyone are sitting close to each other in the physical tower? Is it likely that truck 10 and truck 12 were talking to the same person, but on different frequencies and thus T12 was not aware that T10 already had the information?

    @Viktor Bengtsson in this case the trucks are either on the tower or ground frequency. So approach gets the info from the pilot, relays it to the tower position (in this case the tower and ground position are the same controller) who then relay the information the to fire trucks. The firetrucks only talked to the 1 controller for ground movement and info. Great question: The main difference between ground and local are pretty much that. Ground controls all movement on the ground for which they control. The local controller controls the runways and surrounding designated airspace.

    @Justin Saltalamacchia Thanks a lot for the clarification! So did I understand correctly that the trucks and the pilot talked to different persons? And what is the difference between the roles of ground and local? I guess ground is for taxi and generally moving around the taxiways. The things I know are mostly from watching these kind of videos from another channel, typically featuring Kennedy Steve.

    I always feel like they should just roll out the trucks no matter what the emergency is about (which they seem to always do anyway, regardless of what the pilot requests). I mean, it's not really going to cost anything; the ARFF crews are there standing by anyway, so the "worst" case scenario is that the crew just got an extra live practice drill.

    @LegoTux Same here, precautionary standby rolls all 4 ARFF trucks, Airport Medics & LEO and another Muni ambulance and ALS-Engine/Ladder duo. Confirmed in-air emergency, seems like the whole county descends into chaos, Fire & EMS flood from everywhere.

    Precautionary standby doesnt usually roll municipal backup- at least locally. Confirmed emergency does. If a normal approach is expected, no point in that level of disruption.

    In my area, when they roll ARFF at the airport which serves regional commuter jets. They also pull Ambulances, Engines, and Tankers from about a dozen surrounding towns, many of which only have one Tank or Ambulance. Usually the farther out apparatus get canceled before they get to the airport, because the plane lands without major issues before they arrive.

(I was too lazy to rewind a little and check.) My memory is getting to be a mess! Got a BIG birthday coming up, lol. Anyway, you reminded me of the reason I need to double-check myself.     It's sorta funny/weird how easy it is to blame the pilot. But then I realize that there have been incidents where radios didn't work and planes did weird things, that turned out to have VERY solid reasons. Like that time the pilot got sucked out of the cockpit when a window broke. (luckily, this one sounded less dramatic)
